What do you over the course of a week? How do you fit your workouts in? I get this question often so I thought I would write about it this week–the who, what, where, when, and how of my workout week!
Who? Me, me, me. Yes I put myself first when it comes to working out. That doesn’t mean that I totally ignore my family to get a workout in, but I do sit down at the beginning of the week and schedule my workouts. I look at my training plan or desired workouts, then I figure out how I’m going to work it in each and every time.
What? What do I do every week? I have to admit I’m a creature of habit. I like having a schedule and I like doing the same basic thing each week. Of course I vary at different times of year or when I have a big race coming up, but I generally follow the same routine: SWIM with Palmetto Masters Monday/Wednesday/Friday, RUN Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday, STRENGTH TRAIN Tuesday/Thursday, and BIKE 2-3 times a week…right now that’s M/W/F.
Where? I run early morning in my neighborhood which is large enough that I can get in 10 -12 miles without going stir crazy. Plus it’s dark that it’s not like I can see the same scenery over and over. I use a small flashlight and a blinkie wristband from Mama Lights that lights me up well. For swimming as I said I swim with Palmetto Masters at LTP in Mt. Pleasant and for cycling I have a bike trainer set up in our room over the garage (think big TV and music videos…it’s a great set up).
When? I do one workout at 5 or 5:30 every day. Yup, that’s right…let that sink in a minute;). Every. Day. But with my schedule if I want to get in 2 workouts in one day, I have to do one before the rest of the family is up. My other workout is usually after the kids go to school, or if I’m working, I try to get a workout in later in the day. Truthfully right now I’ve been so busy my strength training has fallen off….but I’m hoping to get back into that…soon…What I’ve learned over time is that if I put off a workout until later in the day, it’s just not going to happen.
Why? To some people my routine sounds totally insane (especially my mom;), but I do this week in and week out because IT KEEPS ME SANE. As one who thrives on routine, I feel great when I can stick to it. As hard as it is to get early on most…er I mean some… mornings, I never regret getting up to do the workout and I feel GREAT when I’m done. I know that no matter what happens the rest of the day, I have started out doing something for my own mental and physical health. It’s a great feeling and I set myself up well to be fully there for my family:)
How do you work out each week? I suggest getting into a workout routine and sticking with it! It’s easy to keep a routine but so much harder to re-start one.
